I, Boss Hawk was born in Mount Olive, North Carolina, a small town in the South. I grew up on a small farm a few miles outside of town. I learned at an early age what hard work was all about. I am the oldest brother of a very large family of nine children. I had a very hard-working mother and father with four brothers and four sisters.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been able to carry a tune. I started singing in the church choir when I was very young along with my sisters and brothers. Singing has always been my first love as long as I can remember. As I grew older, people that heard me sing would always tell me how good I sounded. And, someday with my voice I could become a superstar. Not only did the older adults say it, but the young people and children, also. Even through my years of schooling, my teachers and classmates would tell me the same thing. They were always getting me to entertain them in class.
I began entering talent shows during my eight-grade year. I won every one that I entered. In high school, my bother and I put together a small band so that we could enter a big talent show: The Battle of the Bands. That was during my freshmen year. We entered and won it. We were then chosen to be the band that entertained at all of the school’s functions. During my senior year, I was voted the most talented.
After high school, although I got a job working in a factory, I still loved singing with the band. We would play every Saturday night for a dance at the American Legion. People would come from all around. Soon we were playing for all kinds of events. The country clubs, V.F.W.’s Moose Lodge, private parties, big picnics, pool parties and so on. After a few years of good times, the guys decided to go their separate ways. That’s when I decided to make it on my own. I started me a one man show calling it the “Boss Hawk Show.” I still worked my regular job during the week and performed on weekends. I didn’t mind because I loved music. After a few months on my own, people began bringing out the best in me. I played for the little bars around town, small night clubs, and a few parties every now and then.
Very soon I was well known for my one man show all over town. I was getting calls from everywhere, creating more work than I could handle. I began doing my show for all kinds of activities in and out of town. I had so many bookings that I had to give up my weekday job. I was asked to appear on the morning television talk show, Carolina Today in Greenville, North Carolina. After appearing on the show, I found myself playing all over eastern Carolina. Soon, I began playing and singing in other cities and states; mainly performing in piano lounges and singing “oldies but goodies” and “good old country music.”
I visited Nashville, Tennessee several times because of my love for country music. I loved all types of music, but always wanted to become a country music singer. That’s one of the reasons for visiting Nashville - hoping that I might meet someone in the country music recording business who would listen to me. While I was in Nashville, I did get a chance to perform at the Nashville Palace and the Stockyard. This was where Randy Travis and Rickey Van Shelton got their big chance, I’m told. I wasn’t so lucky at the time.
I’m still working hard each and every day hoping and praying. With the gift God has blessed me with, I hope that my dream of becoming a superstar as singer will one day come true.
